Job Interview Question How Would Your Coworkers Describe You
Job Interview Question How Would Your Coworkers Describe YouJob Interview Question How Would Your Coworkers Describe YouYour resume offers hiring managers an opportunity to review your experience and consider how your past performance qualifies you for the open position. When youre called in for an interview, the focus is figuring out whether or not youre a good culture fit for the company. To answer this question, hiring managers often ask questions related to the soft skills surrounding your job such as What motivates you? and How do you verstndigung im strafverfahren with difficult customers? Another popular interview question that sheds insight into how you function in the workplace is How would your coworkers describe you? Unlike other culture-fit questions, this question requires you to stretch your awareness and consider your performance from a third party perspective. But what makes it incredibly challenging is the number of stories you could tell about what your coworkers th ink about you. Instead of being overwhelmed by the options, heres how to give the most accurate and strategic answer every time Reflect on the Requirements of the New JobWhat are the main functions of the job for which you are interviewing? What personal characteristics will the best fit for the position need to have? What do you know about the culture of the new workplace that is unique from any other? Considering observations related to these questions will help you figure out what the interviewer wants to hear from a prospective candidate. You can then use that information to filter through what is true about yourself to answer the question. For example, when I transitioned out of editing and into digital marketing, I also realized I was transitioning out of a majority-female company into a majority-male company. I would swiftly go from all female bosses and coworkers to all male, and being one of the first female hires, I knew that must be on the minds of my prospective bosses. Keeping this shift in mind, I reflected on how the culture of the new job might be different from my old job.Reflect on Your Performance in Your Past JobsKeeping in mind the primary responsibilities of the new position, reflect on how your past performance might play out in a new environment. Are you making a lateral shift in which you need to reinforce the soft skills, qualifications and habits that you already have? Or are you taking on new responsibilities that need support from stories about how quickly you adapt to change, how positive and energetic you are when experiencing challenges or change? The story you choose out of the hundreds you have available will depend on what your transition looks like. To continue with the interview example, I quickly realized that changing industries from the often slow-paced world of editing to the fast-paced world of digital marketing requires an ability to stay on task and get things done fast. Combining that with the stereotypes that exist about women and performance and what a technology-minded, all-male staff might worry about, I tried to brainstorm a coworker description that highlighted my focus on the job. Merge the Two With a Unique StoryAnswering this question is not an invitation for you to go on a soap box. Once you have a grip on how your answer will reflect on the new workplace and the old workplace, craft it into an attractive, articulate soundbite that answers the question without rambling on too much. If possible, incorporate the power of storytelling into your answer by including anecdotal details that reinforce your point. The actual question I was asked was, What would your co-workers say is your greatest flaw? I took a moment to consider the new workplace and the old workplace, and I shared that my co-workers likely wished I would talk about myself more. I shared a story about how our team was very connected and involved in each others personal lives, but that, as a result of being raised with three brothers in a military family, I often wasnt comfortable sharing a lot of personal details. bedrngnis only was this story true (for better or worse, I tend to take a more stereotypically masculine approach to work in some regard) but it also helped my would-be boss get a better idea of how I would fit into the new culture and what he could expect from me when it came to day-to-day engagement. The stoic knows 4 rituals that will make you well-liked
The stoic knows 4 rituals that will make you well-likedThe stoic knows 4 rituals that will make you well-likedDo you want tohave better relationships? Well, you should definitely take some advice from the Stoics.I know, it sounds weird. Most people think of the Stoics as being emotionless - not exactly good examplesfor how to handle relationships. But thats a myth. The ancient Stoics were big on virtue, self-control and reducingnegativeemotions. And those are pretty good things if youre trying to be more likable. And their methods are backed by science. Stoicism was one of the inspirations for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is currently the dominant method for helping people overcome psychological issues. To get some answersI spoke to Massimo Pigliucci, a professor of philosophy at the City University of New York, and author of the new book,How to Be a Stoic Using Ancient Philosophy to Live a Modern Life.So what can we learn about being likable from the ancient Stoics? Lets get to itNot MePlain and simple stop talking about yourself so much. Focus on the other rolle.Heres Stoic grandmasterEpictetusIn parties of conversation, avoid a frequent and excessive mention of your own actions and dangers. For, however agreeable it may be to yourself to mention the risks you have run, it is not equally agreeable toothers to hear your adventures.Yeah, talking about yourself feels good. In fact, research shows your brain finds it more rewarding than food or money.FromBarking Up the Wrong Tree The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) WrongNeuroscientist Diana Tamir found that your brain gets more pleasure from you talking about yourself than it does fromfood or money. But you want other people to enjoy your company, right? So shut up and letthemfeel good by talking about themselves.(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my new bookhere.)Okay, so youre talking about yourself less. But how do the Stoics think y ou should handle difficult interactions - like when someone insults you?Practice Insult PacifismWhen somebody says youre dumb as a post, how do the Stoics think you should respond? You give me too much credit. Im alotstupider than a post.Heres Stoic hall-of-famerEpictetusagainIf anyone tells you that a certain person speaks ill of you, do not make excuses about what is said of you but answer He was ignorant of my other faults, else he would not have mentioned these alone.Yeah, the other person was mean. But whats the benefit of escalating things into an out-and-out fight? When people insult you, respond with self-deprecating humor. Also, there are longer term personal benefits to this. Not reacting harshly improves your self-control.And by ignoring the tone and just listening to the content of the insult, you might occasionally get some useful feedback on how to improve yourself.FromHow to Be a Stoic Using Ancient Philosophy to Live a Modern LifeThe more you train yourself to endure ins ults the stronger you feel psychologically it is worth ignoring the cutting aspect of what she is saying in order to focus on what it is that she may have gotten right and that may have eluded you. There is no reason at all why insults, even when meant as such, cannot also be teaching moments for us.(To learn 6 rituals from ancient wisdom that will make you happy, clickhere.)So if someone insults you, youre just going to use self-deprecating humor. But what ifyourethe one saying something awful? How do you make sure you dont say something youll regret?Listen To The Angel On Your ShoulderWant to make sure you behave properly? Pretend someone you respect is standing behind you. Maybe its your grandma or a mentor of yours.Would you want to actlike a jerk in front of them? No.Heres MassimoSeneca feltyou shouldgo about your life thinking that there is someone looking over your shoulder. Basically, act likeyou always have to explain your actions tothis meister ego.Would you act like that i n front of grandma? Then dont act like that at all.(To learn the 4 secrets to productivity from the Stoics, clickhere.)So how do you click with new people you meet? Warning this next one may feel a little weird. But its also a little heartwarmingTreat Everyone As FamilyMost of us see family as closer than friends and friends as closer than strangers. Understandable. But what if youtried to pull all three of those levels a little closer together and a little closer to you?Heres MassimoHierocles invited us to imagine a series of concentric circles with ourselves in the middle, then the next circle is our family, and then the next circle is our friends, then out of that there is our fellow citizens, and out of that our fellow countrymen, and finally all of humanity. Then he saidtomentally try to bring all of the external circles closer to you. Meaning that you try to remind yourself that these are all human beings, that these are all people that you should actually care about just in th e same way that you care about your family and your friends.Sounds nice in theory, right? But how do you actually put this into practice? You know how someguys say hello to theirmale friends with the words, Hey, brother?Well, the Stoics approve. And they think you should give it a try.Heres MassimoHieroclessaid you should go around addressing people of your same age as brothers and sisters, and people older than you as aunts and uncles. Itsa sort of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach to things. Its like you do that, you keep repeating this thing, and then gradually you actually feel like other people are your brothers and sisters, your uncles and aunts.Yeah, it might feel a little weird to call people brothers and sisters. But if you do it with a wry smile - cool like Fonzie - it can be a warm and fun way to draw yourself closer to othersAnd them closer to you.(To learn the 4 rituals from Stoicism that will make you mentally strong, clickhere.)Okay, weve learned a lot. Lets roun d it all upSum UpHere are the 4 rituals from Stoicism that will make you lovedNot meStop talking about yourself. Let me talk about me and Ill enjoy your company more. Trust me, Ive writtenfarworse.Listen to the angel on your shoulderGrandma is watching, potty-mouth.Treat everyone as familyTreatpeople as your brothers and sisters and theyll likely reciprocate. Now is this going to turn you into Dale Carnegie overnight? No. But that wouldnt be a very Stoic expectation. They were big on practicing exercises to improve over time.Massimo paraphrased SenecaDont ask me to be perfect just ask me to be better than yesterday. If you talk less about yourself, laugh off insults, and act like grandma is watching, youll find that people will enjoy your company much more.Trust me, brother or sister.Join over 300,000 readers.Get a free weekly update via emailhere.Related postsWhat 10 things should you do every day to improve your life? How To Make Your Life Better By Sending Five Simple Emails4 Lifehacks From Ancient Philosophers That Will Make You HappierThisarticleoriginally appeared atBarking Up the Wrong Tree.

A Future in Bioengineering
A Future in Bioengineering A Future in Bioengineering A growing field awaits for those who enjoy mixing engineering with a love of medicine or science.Bioengineering is as broad as its name implies but there are areas that are on the rise for those considering the fieldand a changing education to go with it. University of Illinois bioengineering lecturer and chief academic advisor Jennifer Amos says many at her university go straight into the industry through medical or prosthetic design. In terms of our graduates in the Midwest, there are many medical device companies and students are seeing good jobs open up, she says. After the first two years of their program, students diverge into the computational track for programming and bioinformatics for gene research. There is so much going on in the field, she says. Think of imaging that has only been around for the past 20 years and exploring imaging techniques for better diagnostics cell and tissue has taken up the last 10. Its about com ing up with ways to replace tissues .You also look at the therapeutic side with drug delivery. Its interesting and profitable work.Amos says quantitative biology and computational biology systems are the fastest growing fields, looking at areas such as comparing a human or animal system to a theoretical or computational system. Its understanding how to make a model and then use a model to confirm what we see in the human, she says. We learn from the process and then the top-down in clinical trials. When you start trials, you cant alter dosage or delivery methods. By having better models, we can predict these kind of things and make changes that are safer. However, Amos says its the electrical aspects that are becoming less popular. We were born out of the electrical engineering department, focusing on things like neurology. Circuits and systems used to be the top priority. It doesnt mean electrical isnt a part of the curriculum but its just more deemphasized now.Christopher Niels, a l ecturer in bioengineering for the University of Washington, Seattle, believes a top quality for this area of study is something notlage measured as easily as a clinical trial passion. The students in our department are motivated by medical technology, so they work hard to excel in engineering, he says. Conversely, the bioeng community is better served by graduates who put their hearts into academics because of a love for green energy, for example, and then became a bioengineer, than by someone who is half-interested in their biomedical studies. I am consistently impressed by the focus and drive that my students have, and think that it bodes well for the future of bioengineering.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.I am consistently impressed by the focus and drive that my students have, and think that it bodes well for the future of bioengineering.Christopher Niels, University of Washington

Making the Case for Affordable Childcare
Making the Case for Affordable ChildcareMaking the Case for Affordable ChildcareIts widely known that among developed nations, theU.S. struggles to keep up with its peers on paid family leave policies. This is a shame, but theres a bigger issue we need toaddress. That issue is finding everyone the good, affordable childcare we all dream about finding for our kids. If were going to delegate our childcare to someone, we want our children to learn something, be well-fed, and have their health and well-being prioritized. Unfortunately, theres a good chunk of us in the U.S. who either cant afford this kind of care or who are barely making ends meet, putting a third of our salary toward childcare. But theres hope Affordable, good-quality daycare is becoming a hot issue. People like Ivanka Trump are advocating for it and college professors are studying it. Heres what they have found out and how good childcare could positively affect us all. Research Results If the U.S. instituted afforda ble daycare, child poverty would decrease. If children experience a good-quality education, starting from birth, the U.S. would benefit economically and socially, according to astudy leuchtdiode by Professor James H. Heckman titled The Lifestyle Benefits of an Influential Early Childhood Program. In Professor Heckmans research, boys and girls who came from disadvantaged families enrolled in the studys free, good-quality childcare program. From infancy to the age of 8, Heckman and his colleagues studied the childrens educational advancement, emotional intelligence, and home life as well as their families atmosphere and finances. Then at 12, 15, 21, and 30, the study subjects education, finances, and emotional well-being continued to be monitored. At 35, the study reached out one last time to perform a medical survey and a criminal background check. Professor Heckman discovered that every dollar spent on high-quality, birth-to-five programs for disadvantaged children delivers a 13 per cent per year return on investment. What this means is that if the U.S. government funded this program, the future monetary payoff would be big. There were other payoffs discovered, too. The children in the study were healthier and led a good life. They were better educated and better employed and brought home a higher salary. These children were less likely to be involved in criminal acts because they were good people in our society. Last, but not least, the childrens mothers were able to earn a bigger paycheck because their kids were in this program. Effects on the workplace could be vast and far-reaching A Shakedown in the Workplace The pay gap would close up pretty quick if working moms were able to work better. With affordable, good-quality childcare, moms would stress less about the well-being of their child and the cost associated with that. With capable, competent daycare, women may not suffer from mommy tracking or the motherhood penalty. This means motherhood wouldnt co unt against them during their hiring process. How people view moms would change. Theyd be seen as competent and committed to their work. Bloomberg.com published an article about howU.S. economists should be concerned about working moms. Childcare is a big barrier for working families to face. If there were affordable childcare, fewer women would leave the workforce and would continue contributing to the growth of the U.S. economy. Paid leave and work flexibility would help, too, but good childcare would be the icing on the cake. Safer and More Fun Schools When children have good-quality daycare, they learn to get along well with their peers. Imagine what the world be like if we didnt have to worry about bullying. From the study, we learned those who received affordable, good-quality care developed into better-mannered children. When they grew up, they had a greater chance of treating their wives or husbands better and were less likely to be charged with domestic violence. That m eanttheirkids were better off. There could also be less drug abuse because people use drugs to escape their problems. With affordable childcare, parents would be able to work harder, earn mora money, and provide a better upbringing for their child. Their reality wouldnt be one theyd want to run away from. This would benefit all children because there would be fewer drug dealers on the block. A Better-Educated Workforce Fast forward 30 years, after affordable, good-quality daycare is implemented. More-competent and better-educated workers would be in the office. These good-mannered individuals would be easier to work with, motivate, and promote. Office drama could become something of the past. These well-supported adults would have higher emotional intelligence and wouldnt waste their time and energy with office politics. At a young age, these adults would have learned how to get along with others. They would have grown up outside of poverty. Instead of gossiping and experiencing jealousy, these adults would focus more on teamwork and success. Professor Heckmans study teachesus that a better future starts with helping those less fortunate than us. And theres data that prove it. Imagine the trickle effect everyone would experience if the U.S. decides to invest in our childrens care.
